You don't have to buy apples if they're not British. You can always wait till they are in season.

Although I live less than 5 miles from the large Tesco in my area, there is no bus from my town to the store so I have to drive my car there.]

I think that you would need to contact your local bus company about this

Unfortunately we are now in a situation where consumers demand that they can get produce any time of the year and supermarkets are giving what the consumer want , if you also look down the fruit and veg isles of the supermarket the fruit and veg looks perfect alot of it goes to waste , orgainc is the worst up to 45% does not pass the criteria and thats one of the reasons its so expensive !

There was a program about "food miles" the other week, 2 families were asked to get ingrediants for a meal one had to buy local and the other could buy anything, the ones buying local produce used 180 food miles and the other couple that bought anything in the supermarket used 28,000 food miles and that was just for 1 meal

With air travel being so cheap nowadays it will get worse i really think the governments around the world should be heavily taxing flights.

I was in a Tesco store in Wokingham this week and could not find a single British (or even European apple) in the store other than cooking apples.

The irony is that Tesco now claim to be "going green". These apples were from the farthest reaches of the planet (New Zealand, Chile etc) clocking up a huge amount of air miles to get here. I bought no apples.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get Tesco to carry out their pledges?
Hey i do not suppose that your local big Tesco is Reading Extra? If so i beleive there is a free bus put on , but i'm not sure of details, i can give you a number though (just the one that appears on the website) The number is for Reading Gold line ( 0118 959 6000).

    Best of luck.

If you are having trouble with getting about, on Tesco's website if you go to store locator you can search for stores with a free bus service near you. They give you a number to ring,i have only just discovered this - may be worth keeping in mind.

We use a holiday cottage about 10 miles from the nearest Tesco's, beforehand we go online and look up codes that normally more than cover the cost of the delivery charge, we also arrive very late sometimes after flying in from late flights and the owners take delivery of our groceries.

We sometimes have a mid-week delivery too. It saves us time & money & mileage, and so is also 'green'. The cottage owner says it's brilliant for areas like this where the public transport is either limited/over priced/non-existent.

does anyone remember the Mark Thomas Project on Tesco Organics on C4

    from what I can remember

a courier delivered a box for tesco and shortly afterwards was admitted to hospital as his hands and arms were covered with very bad sores.
he only touched the sealed box - not the seeds
Tesco refused to identify what was in the box but after some legal pressure it was Organic seeds - brough in from another country that had been sprayed with a banned pesticide- but although illegal in the UK as it was sprayed in another country it didnt break any laws.

on being pushed Tesco addmitted this and that some of the goods labeled organic were infact not - bananas being one of the fruits proved to be labeled wrong.

I do prefer organic foods but I do agree that many firms do overprice goods for being organic.
How many organic foods are not really and also organic meat cant really be organic as the animals are still fed growth hormones, steroids, anitibiotics and other chemicals.

we need stricter laws and stopp this max 6 pesticides rule too

Organic isn't perfect, or it would be unworkable. However, it is a lot, lot better than conventional farming.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

So are there no other shops within ten miles?

Obviously you can't do this if you're flying but we take food with us when we go on holiday so while we're there we just need to buy stuff like milk which can usually be bought locally.
