I became mortgage free in September having finally paid off my ING Direct mortgage. However I haven't heard anything from the Land Registry regarding the deeds to the house, is this normal?

Yes!
The deeds are held elecronically by the LR. The paper copies are no longer important. In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
It might be worth you obtaining a copy of your title form the Land Registry and check that the mortgage has been removed from your title.
No need to use a lawyer. You can do this yourself on-line.0
