Time to use up your Borders vouchers...

I actually quite like Borders, so this isn't great news.

I know my local Borders has been looking more and more sorry for itself over the last few months - not much new stock, piles of bargain basement books, CD racks padded out with empty cases, and now a big rack of chocolates. I've seen all this in places I've worked before. The question is, just how long have they got left?

  • I went to spend a Borders voucher on Friday (27 Nov), and was told that vouchers are now only accepted if you spend the same amount again at the time. So we ended up spending £52 in order to benefit from the £25 voucher.

I can't help thinking this must be illegal to change the terms & conditions on vouchers, but I figured they may have decided to stop accepting them altogether by the time I went and did some research. Does anyone know the legal position on this, to prevent others being stung the same way?

Basically, Borders are In Administration. That means the 'old' company is no more, and your gift voucher is a 'Creditor' item, ie the old company owes you the money, but does not have enouhg to pay you.

The Adminstrators are being 'kind' (or clever ?) in allowing you to use half the value of the gift card - more than most other similar stores in that position.

This is not illegal, nor is it changing the Terms and Conditions. The gift card was with the old company, not the current on 'In Administration' - they owe you nothing !
  • I've just had the same issue in my local Borders in Cambridge (where the sales assistant tried to argue that in fact my gift card is now worth more because all the books are reduced...!). The lesson I have learnt from this is not to buy gift cards or tokens from any store - the same could happen again. Don't give them any money until they give you goods in exchange.
  • i too was told the same in leeds today but don't think i have more than about a tenner and was gonna get my Dads calendar for Christmas so wil use them up soon.

I too will be sad to see Borders go the staff are always really friendly.
