Added to that, voluntary work might give some indication that you've turned over a new leaf. You've accepted your mistakes, and are prepared to build on your experiences and give something back (plus you'll get that much sought-after reference).
It could serve as a good crutch if the worse happens - i.e. your next employer finds out about your dismissal, and/or you're prepared to come clean about it in any case. Getting your head down and getting stuck into something and show a bit of will and drive - even if voluntary - isn't a shabby idea for you at all.
