Applying liquid eyeliner....

Is there a knack?
I'm not a big make up wearer, none for work..mainly when I go out in the evening ( which isn't very often..) and I really think I have no idea what I'm doing and just hope it looks OK.
I'd love to be able to wear eye liner, but every time I try to put it on it looks like I've attacked my eyes with a black marker pen!!!

Any one got any tips on how not to end up looking like Che -Che the panda????

Use black-brown instead of black or even just brown for a more natural effect. If you use it on the inner part of the lower lid, try using it along the line of the lashes instead.

I've always used Maybelline's liquid eyeliner and I only ever put it on my upper eyelid. Don't stretch the eye too much when applying and apply it with a light touch and quickly. I'm really cack handed and the more precise I try to be, the worse it looks IYKWIM.

  • Rest your elbow on a steady surface and try to draw the line in one, it's much easier to build up depth if you apply thin lines than a thick one.

I use old fashioned cake eye liner where you have to wet the brush first, it's much easier to correct mistakes than the liquid eyeliner (in my opinion).

Also practice makes perfect, why not have a few practice sessions before your night out.
  • for the upper lid- i prefer using a slanted brush as find this much easier-but it does take practice
  • Hi

The Rimmel one is pretty good. I think its fashionable for it to be a bit wonky anyway a la Winehouse.

Have some Baby wipes or cotton buds dipped in make up remover to hand and just take away the dodgy bits and reapply until it looks good :)

I use the maybelline one, its essentially a felt tip eyeliner, and dead easy to apply.

All I do is shut my eye, and press the tip on the inner corner and work my way across.

    Quick and easy.

I cant for the life of me do it with the brush ones.

Maybe use eye shadow as liner - apply with a dampened slanty brush - might be a bit more subtle. Also, I've tried eye liner on its own without putting on eye shadow first on the eyelid and I just end up looking tired and rough! I am the "interesting" side of 40 and only now just learning and experimenting :)

A trick I've found for liquid liner is to start from the middle of your eyelid then work outwards, then from the inner corner of your eye to the middle. It means most of the colour is left where you want it in the middle of your eye, and then there's less colour on the brush when you do the more delicate inner corner.

Ermm... what else... I don't use liquid liner on the lower eyelids, and tbh I find a sharpened pencil liner much easier on the upper lids too.

If you do make a mistake with your eyeliner, don't worry - put a light base colour all over the eyelind, then get a sponge applicator and a darkish eyeshadow (doesn't have to be black, depends on what suits you and what matches your base colour) and hold the brush vertically and work the shadow onto the lash line, you should then be able to blend it into the base colour. Sounds more complicated then it is when you write it!

I have made many mistakes so this is all from experience!

  • The easiest liners to apply (if we're talking about liquid liners) are ones that are like felt tips - I'm rubbish at doing normal liner where you "paint" it on, but these are really easy!
