For a 10 year old, look no further than this exclusive disney netbook:
There is the blue edition, available for £279.99 from play.com:
Asus Eee PC MK90H Disney Edition
It got a very good review in pcmag.com
(unfortunately this website won't let me post links for some reason)
It's small and cute, I'm sure your son will love it. And Asus is renowned for making very reliable and solid netbooks. I have seen this one but in pink at my local electronics store. I too am looking for a netbook and will settle with the Asus 1005HA - just waiting for the christmas sales.
Each to their own, but I personally prefer netbooks to larger laptops. I have a nice big powerful computer at home that is more powerful and yet costs a lot less than any laptop I would buy. I would want a second portable computer to be mobile: surf the net in bed, carry it around with me wherever I want. For this end, netbooks are ideal; larger laptops are pointless if you have a desk top computer at home. And the more powerful a laptop is, the more likely it will over heat and cause all sorts of problems due to it's small size and inefficient heat exchange.0 -

also the screen is too small to be useable (http://www.netbookace.com/choosing-netbook-screen-size-screen-resolution/), ... the price may make them look appealing but the limitations of it will quickly render it unused. Better to spend a bit more for a proper Windows machine, that will at least be of use for the next few school years.0 -
I would also suggest that whichever lapotop / netbook you do decide to get - don't get Vista on it! XP is still the best by far althought Windows 7 is certainly much much better than Vista.
They might try and flog you a vista based operating system and they may be quite cheap, but i'd seriously consider getting one on XP / 7Sites I Use: PriceCuts.co.uk & FreeFivers.co.uk0
