    3rd quarter lucky...maybe.

    Do you think it will be revised to growth from the -0.4% preliminary on Wednesday?
  • I would not discount the possibility of a revision, but by enough to turn -0.4% into a positive, I would doubt.

    Perhaps I should have said;

    "For the third period (3rd quarter) in a row we've had positive stories of the alleged "recovery", maybe this time it will be true..."

    ...didn't mean to confuse the Jul-Sep '3rd quarter' with the third 'period' of news...

    I agree on that (that to revise to growth would be too much). I think it will be hard not for the 4th 1/4 to be positive.
    But I think we all agree that any recovers is going to be very, very slow. (more like stagnation)

    Unforunately unemployment will get worse even if the country starts to come out of recession.

    As The Times points out:
    As the UK recovered from the recession of 1979-81, unemployment continued to rise, peaking at 3.3 million people in 1984. It was not until 2000 that the unemployment rate finally returned to its 1979 level.

    I have seen graphs showing this is a common feature of recessions though I don't have the links to hand.

    So companies may start to feel better but the people may not. I guess it is natural for companies to be wary of taking more staff on until they are sure the recovery is sustainable.

    Interesting that Labour were in power 1979 and 2000 icon7.gif
