Right, DD has given me an orange sim with £10 on it.
If I put it in my phone to get the code & then swap it back for my sim will I loose the text?
Is the text in the phone or on the sim?
Do I need a seperate (old) phone for the orange sim?
If the phone ISN'T UNLOCKED (that is ... IT IS LOCKED to a specific network) then the Orange SIM won't work
Depending on the make & model of the phone you might be able to unlock it for free - or it might cost you anywhere between £5 & £20ish to get a "professional" to do it - or it might not be possible at all !

If your phone IS UNLOCKED and the Orange SIM works, just get your DD to send you a text whilst it's "on Orange", swap back to your usual SIM and check !

Neither of us are on orange (both on O2).
She just happened to have a sim.
So what should we do in that case?
Not sure what you mean.
If the Orange SIM works in your phone then you are just about sorted.
You daughter can send you a test text (to check that it is still there after you swap SIMs) irrespective of her being on O2
