My PC won't hibernate

Options
I have a battery back up system because we have frequent power cuts. When the battery is running low, the software tries to put my pc into hibernation but the machine shuts down and then instantly restarts again. I'm using Windows XP.
I don't think it is anything to do with the battery back up as it never worked properly before.
Can anyone help with this
Thanks

Hibernation won't be supported by default with a desktop machine.

Checkout power options in the control panel - there should be a hibernate tab where you turn on support.
  • There is a hibernate tab - and its set to enable- but still doesn't work
  • did you just try to press and release the power button once, when the PC is on?
  • Just tried that - it hibernated and then started back up again
  • Funnily i have a similiar problem. i have my Vista desktop connected to a belkin battery backup system. and it restarts as soon as i hibernate it, but there are times where it does hibernate. Just as a experiment I close all but one program (that i regularly use) to see what causing the problem.
Itunes ( for me this causes problems on rehibernation)
Utorrent or any other P2P program

  • Hibernation is a major PITA to get working if it is not. One thing you could try is going into your BIOS and making sure it is not set to wake on USB and Network as both of these may be waking your PC up as soon as it goes to sleep/hibernates.

    Try this also

Also try disconnecting everything USB and see if that solves it
  • Thanks Billywhizz, might try some of that later - or just carry on ignoring it as I have for the last year!! I should have known it would be complicated.
  • Do you have a wireless keyboard and/or mouse? My computer would come out of sleep mode instantly until I unchecked the box in Device Manager to enable these to wake the computer.
  • I have got a wireless keyboard and mouse - and I so much wanted it to be this - but no that didn't work.
