solicitor's fees

I have been quoted £495 + vat for a solicitor to look at a lease for a property that I wish to rent. The lease seems fairly straightforward so I just thought it would be sensible for a solicitor to cast his eye over it. I had no idea it would cost this much. Is this a reasonable amount? Can they charge what they want and should I shop around. I am working to a tight time schedule.

This sounds extortionate to me! I think you should be able to find a cheaper solicitor as our solicitor fees were less than that for purchasing a house (and that included examining the lease for our leasehold property).
My advice would be to get your local CAB or housing advice centre to look over the lease for you as they will give you advice you for free! If you are a student you could try your student union advice centre as they sometimes look at leases for students wanting to rent or they will be able to point you in the right direction.0 -
Are you sure the solicitor was not quoting you for drawing up a lease? Either that or he didn't want the job!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
