Christmas Pudding Challenge...

Right

So

My mum hates candied peel. I am not that fond of it either.

As such, this year I have volunteered to make a Christmas Pudding rather than her go without, as usual.

However, all the recipes I can find want me to put this vulgar ingredient in.

Question 1: Does anyone have a recipe that does not involve candied peel?

or Question 2: What can I use instead?!

Thanks :D

That's a first - I've never heard an ingredient referred to as vulgar on OS :rotfl:

Do as I do and make your own candied peel from real fruit - that's not vulgar, it's artisnal :p

Veggie suet is fine, I doubt you'll find a non-veggie Christmas pud in any supermarket.

Just replace the peel with some cherries or currants.

I don't like it either, unless its the very expensive strip stuff which I rarely buy - I use cherries too - or chopped dried dates/apricots/prunes

My aunt makes one out of an old Dairy cookery book, it was fab, not very dark, more brown than black & very nutty.
Shame she lives in another country.

Anyone have an old Dairy cookery book?

  • Hi! Both me and my mum are veggie and I make Chrimbo pud for us every year. I use either bought Atora veggie suet or if I don't have any or am not feeling too flush (I find the fruit I use a bit expensive) then I put a block of hard vegetable fat in the freezer for a while and then grate it with a cheese grater. Ping! Just as good as the bought suet! I can't remember where I picked that little gem up from. Veggie suet does not effect your pudding at all.

On the candied peel thing...I hate "normal fruit" so I just use whatever else I like so long as I make up the right quantities. The general favourite is natural cherries (not the bright horrid ones), cranberries and blueberries. No candied peel need be involved! Yum yum!
Oh! And I use the recipie from my trusty old Bero book. :)

  • A bit of-topic, but can I pass on an old Oz Clarke recommendation for a wine to serve with Xmas pud - tried and tested by me over many years. Moscatel de Valencia - honey sweet on its own, but just take a mouthful of pud and a sip of this wine ... Trust me, it's delicious. And the wine isn't difficult to get or expensive either. ASDA have it currently for under £4.00 a bottle.
