Not earning, can I still be on mortgage with DH?

Probably a v silly question
But I've been steaming ahead thinking about mortgages but never thought about the fact I'm not earning/working as I'm currently at home with our two young children.
So, DH is the earner. Can I still be on the mortgage eventhough I'm not contributing financially? Apologies for the silly post, in the past when we had mortgages (now paid off), we've always both been earning....
PS - I am actually registered as self employed and do a very odd bit of ad-hoc designing but it's literally about one commission every few months and gives just pocket money really. Would you declare this to the lender or just not bother - no real income per se and may just cause complications due to self employment? Also, I've only been doing it about 2 years so not really any accounts - I do declare to the HMRC but it's so small I don't pay tax or NI.

You can be on the mortgage without your income being taking into account.0

You apply for and get a mortgage based on the situation that day.
What then happens after that day is of no interest to the mortgage company whatsoever so long as you're paying the mortgage.
You could both be unemployed and so long as you're making the payments, it doesn't matter. Nothing changes.
The only time it would matter is if you apply for a new mortgage. At that time, your current situation would be assessed, to see if at that point, on that day, you qualified for one and how much it would be. But that's all. If you applied for a new mortgage and were turned down because the earnings weren't enough, this wouldn't affect your current mortgage at all.0 -
PasturesNew - we will actually be applying for a new mortgage..... so I won't be earning when applying for it but DH is.
Andy - thanks - seems we can apply jointly eventhough I'm not working/earning.
PS - Should I declare my v small self employment bit to the lender or not? I think it may open a 'can of worms' with regard to certifying income etc when in fact really I don't earn much at all from it - it's more like a hobby with a little bit of pocket money and definately not regular....?0 -
You can apply jointly even if you aren't working. Unless you have a bad credit rating it won't really matter.
I wouldn't bother including very small income. There are lots of stay at home mums who are on their husbands/partners mortgages.0 -
Thanks Radiantsoul - the thing is re the income, I'm so worried about 'lying' on our application I want to make sure I do the right thing lol!
My credit file seems OK - if anything we won't get a mortgage as we have no debt or a miniscule amount which we've always paid off in full lol! We've had mortgages in the past but paid them off v early so they no longer show up on our credit files (over 6 years ago).0
