using 2 strands of chunky instead of mega chunky

I have not knitted for more than 20 years but have now got the urge to start again. I have found a lovely sirdar pattern done in Denham Ultra (mega chunky) but am staggered by the price of wool.smiley3.gif. I will need 11 balls so will cost in the region of £50. Went to the local market today to discover a seller of wool in the inside market. He says that I can knit 2 strands of his chunky wool together to get the same effect and will probably only have to buy a similar amount of wool due to the extra metres that are in the balls due to being thinner (hope that makes sense). Does this seem feasible

any help/suggestion will be gratefully received :D
thanks

Yes, I've been doing this for years. The weight is about the same used double so if you need 1100g in the sirdar, you'll just get the same amount of the substitute. (I usually get 1 extra ball just in case). You only need to be careful if one of the yarns is wool or cotton.
In the days before mega chunky, I used to use 8 strands of DK or 4 and 1 chunky. You can get some really interesting effects. Hope you enjoy knitting it up.

  • I regularly use two strands of dk to make chunky, so I'm sure you could do the same with two strands of chunky, just check the gauge before you start
