Did my yoghurt make me ill?!

I made a vegetable soup last night and added 2 tbsps of plain yoghurt at the end, to be honest I couldn't remeber how long the yoghurt had been there so I did the smell/taste test and ate the soup. I looked at the carton after and realised it's 3 weeks out of date, so has probably been open for 2 weeks. I thought nothing of it, until I woke in the night with a stomach ache.
I'm not sure if the two things are related, but to be honest the reason I'm asking is there's another portion of the soup in the fridge and I can't decide whether to eat it or chuck it!
Can old yoghurt make you ill, or are the two things a coinsidence? Answers on a postcard!

Yoghurt is made out of bacteria, so I'ld chuck it, if I was you. HTH0

Well, if it was live yoghurt it would just get sourer and sourer but as the yoghurt bacteria would keep most other bacterial growth under control, it's unlikely to become dangerous. Remember that you use live yoghurt as a starter to make other yoghurt so in practice it can go on for years.
If it was pasturised "dead" yoghurt though it could become contaminated with other bacteria and go a bit nasty.
I use out of date live yoghurt all the time, tbh. I sniff it, taste it and if it's not too sour I use it for cooking, or start off my own yoghurt sometimes, or use it for yoghurt bread.
If you just had a tummy ache without any sickness or skitters then I don't think you'll have done yourself any harm, assuming it was the soup at all. But if you're going to feel uneasy about eating the other half then don't. You won't enjoy it anyway so why bother?Val.0 -
It was tesco value natural yoghurt
Yes I think that I might worry about eating the soup so maybe best not to, I never bother with sell by dates but this time I am feeling a bit eek!0 -
Could it be the type of veg you used in the soup that gave you tummy ache? Too much fibre can have funny effects you know:rotfl:if my tummy is anything to go by!!LBM March 2011 (what on earth took me so long?)overdraft (1) -2950 overdraft (2) -246.00total CC £12,661 :eek:loan £5000DFD 2016:eek::eek: (cant come soon enough)0

Lol well dilemma over - just went to fridge and it appears OH has eaten it last night after I went to bed!
Oh dear, my cooking can be somewhat erratic so if I really have poisoned him I will never live it down!0 -
The yoghurt would have been boiled in the soup so I think it's likely that if there were any harmful bacteria in it they would have been killed anyway. If you're not eating a lot of vegetables normally I suspect that it's the sudden influx of vegetables into your diet that has probably given you the stomach ache or the squitters.0
