I've got to say this - you really shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush. I *had* to take a job in a collections department back in March. I had been made redundant from my previous job due to the company going into administration. I had to go 8 weeks without a single penny coming in, as they had no money to pay my wages or redundancy pay, and the DWP dragged their heels in setting up my JSA claim and had no end of hassle setting up a Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefit claim. I pretty much sent my CV to anywhere and everywhere that were advertising jobs, and the first one that came along was a collections job. I had a choice, either take it, or not eat.
While I was there I was "terrible" at my job (by their standards, not mine), as I hated it and hated pressuring people to pay. Having just been through all that myself I knew how it felt. I kept applying for jobs anywhere and everywhere just to get out of there. a few months later I managed to get something else.
So, in short, not everyone in a collections department is that horrible. Though I fully agree that some are. But please bear in mind that there's bound to be more people out there like me that are doing it as it's the only thing that has come along for them so far.
And I find the comment that suggest people like me are somewhat similar to Nazi war criminals disgusting.0 -
Lilmissevil, I'm sure previous comments weren't aimed at honest, decent caring people like yourself, who just need to take any job to get out of a bind. I think the argument is there is a contingent of these debt collectors who take some sick, sadistic pleasure out of intimidating people in to paying more than they can afford.
Those that are good at it probably get promoted and praised for their "good" work, that I find disgusting.
I also find it disgusting that the OP's CC company sold the debt on when a proactive dialog was opened and a reasonable offer of repayment was made.0
