    Can anyone advise me please?
Can you use any hedgerow rosehips for syrup/jelly?

There are loads by us but some are much bigger than others. This willbe my first time using them so I am not quite sure which ones to pick.

    Thanks

ahh ceridwen- whilst you are around perhaps you could answer my question - it relates directly to foraging so isn't of topic at all.

Apples still not ready round these parts - tried one from the small but laden fruit near my work car park but still small and sour

Oh and slightly off thread but nevertheless relevant travellers are named as a racial group and discrimination against them would be classed as racism

    *sigh*
we have lived alongside the travellers every summer here and frequently talk to the ones who come back Splodger the point I was making was about the destruction not the fact that any particular ethnic group is better or worse than any others..christ I get enough of that because of where I live :(
As I said before I would rather the fruit be picked than rot but why destroy the trees too?

Mrs VegPlot don't forget to seive out the tiny hairs.

Rachb the syrup is lovely and you can also dilute it as a nice drink in the summer with lots of ice :D

ceridwen I'm ok thanks as I have 2 little bowls of pears still to process for the neighbours and my parents so didn't need to get any more I would have just liked a few of the apples but not to worry I have my brothers cookers :D

PS RAS its a big tall orange bottle are they any good??

Pazu- sorry RL is giving you are hard time and preventing you from foraging. Totally agree with everything yo have said.

Herb pillows sound interested --can you tell me more??

  • The brambles are looking dire here. We still have flowers on some of them so they have little chance of ripening before the frosts hit.:(

It is the best year for fungi I have ever known though so we too are eating alot of mushroom risotto and are drying the escess for use through the winter.

All the apple and plum trees around here are groaning under the weight of their fruit.
  • Gathered some rosehips and haws this afternoon for jellies before they get blown away. :D

Weather permitting tommorrow I will try for more sloes and bullaces. I'm desperate to pick the hazlenuts too (there are sooo many this year) but think it's a bit early....

I'm dreaming of hazlenut brownies.

jealous of hazelnuts - i saw a cob on the ground the other day and got giddy looking for the tree whence it came but no luck! Some pesky squirrel probably dropped it just to taunt me!

  • Hi everyone

I have got a bramble bush in my garden, i dont normally take anything from it but today i decided to pick a small bowl of them. They where ripe, i rinsed them well and poured boiled water over them after just to make sure. I have now eaten them and they where lovely! Is it ok for me to do this? I usually buy boxes of blackberries from the supermarket but i know these are just wild blackberries so surely if washed they are ok?

Also is there any other wild fruits i can go picking if i happen to come across any hidden treasures!? Many thanks

  • You buy blackberries??? Wowsers.

Anyhow - yes there are loads and loads of things that can be foraged.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
