We're off to get a few pears tomorrow as I still have a few of my brothers cooking apples to use.
I've found a recipe in the River Cottage Preserves book for Apple,Pear and ginger mincemeat sounds lush :D

On a side note I have one of those apple peeler, corer, slicer gadgets from lakelands and read/saw somewhere someone used it on their pears...marvellous it works really well!! Mkae sure you push the 'fat' end onto the spikes.

i picked a bucket of mirabelle (wild yellow plums) today - from our woods - as they are not as juicy as normal plums - and i am going to make wine from them - do you think i should treat them more like an apricot or more like a sloe - when it comes to adapting a recipe to suit them ?

Use a damson or plum recipe seeing as it's the same 'family' of fruit.hth.

  • my friendly local farmer pointed me in the right direction (for elderberries) today :j

i managed to pick a fair amount - 5kg's more off the stalks and in the very full to overflowing freezer :T

did manage to squeeze in the freezer the 2kg's of blackberries i picked from his hedgerows too ;)

the blackberries in that patch are only just getting going - so i reckon i could have a couple of weeks of serious foraging along that stretch of field hedges - and the rosehips look awesome too :j

Just noticed that the blackberries are starting to ripen here so we are going to start gathering them! So nice to get the jam and wine making going.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!

Managed to get out yesterday and gathered masses of chanterelles as well as some oyster mushrooms and hedgehog mushrooms. There are HUGE amounts of all 3 just coming ( in spots they have never thrived before) so we will go back next weekend for more. We shared our bounty with our friends too. ;)
I'm going to dry the hedgehogs and chanterelles today.
