The jams and preserves book I got from the library suggests making syrup for drinks from rosehips - apparently they're very rich in vitamin C.

Found a lovely yellow plum tree in our local woods. Went to get some today & the council (in there path clearing mission) have cut lots of branches off so most of the fruit was withered on the floor  There was only a few left on the branches, so left them as I've already had some nice ones from there & felt that was only fair. Still very disapointed though, especially as they've left lots of brambles overgrowing but have hacked away at this tree! :(

:(My council done the same. Luckily the bushes were quite deep so I still managed to get quite a few. Enough to make some wine!

Went mushroom hunting today to a forest we haven't tried before. Found a few ceps and a decent patch of oyster mushroms but the best was a HUGE patch of chanterelles. We took about a sixth of them which was 4lb. :j I usually preserve them in oil but have a new method for freezing them which I'll try.
Going out again at the weekend to start the foraging in earnest. Blackberries aren't ready up here yet but we'll get some Rowan berries to make jelly.

We foraged a pound or so of blackberries today in the hedgerows near our allotment . I made 5 jars of jam for the first time ever and it's scrummy and only cost about 28p per jar. I'm a foraging novice and wondered what could I make with rosehips and quince?
    Thanks

I make quince jelly and also the Spanish thingy called membrillo, (quince paste), which is delish with cheese or on toast.....

I must be late for blackberries, DD and I went looking today but one place there werent enough to pick and the other place they had all dried up!

Will go to my elderberry place tomorrow and try and pick those. I've foraged for years but have never found plums, cherries, greengages etc.

Had a bit of a scout around today and have found some elderberries, Lots of rowan trees and I think some sloes. Also spotted a tree with red apples strangely the apple flesh is red all the way through. Anyone know what kind this is? Sadly the majority of the blackberries have now rotted on the bushes around here :(
What can you do with the berries of a Rowan tree I didn't know you could eat them.

Wow! I have only ever found the odd chanterelle.

They make nice infused vodka - tastes slightly of apricot :)

The usual thing to make is rowan jelly. Said to be good with game. They're one of those fruits that shouldn't be eaten raw though.
  • Went out hunting for foraging sites yesterday evening and found a few goodies :D

    1 Bullace tree/bush
    3 or 4 Damson trees
Around 8 Apple trees. Couple of eating, but mainly cooking
    Loads of Blackberries
    Loads of Elderberries

Not all ready for picking yet, so going back in a couple of weeks when my freezers will be empty :j
