Hi,

I am thinking about getting my wife a Iphone for Christmas. But in the end it only makes real sense if the Area has a decent 3G reception.

I don't wanna ask the shops yet, as I am sure they will say anything to just sell me the phone. Anyone has any 3G experience in Newry?

Regards,
dsab

I have not really looked at Newry but it is hard to get any Orange signal where I live in Warrenpoint, 3g is some sort of ridiculous dream! The guides from the providers do tend to suggest there is very little availability. I looked into the internet dongles but gave up because they suggested that i would probably only get a 3g signal as an exception and if outside....
    Always overestimating...

Looking at the coverage maps, Orange have the better 3G signal in Newry although it seems patchy. Having an iPhone myself, they aren't very good at picking up a weak signal and O2's 3G coverage is pants in the rest of NI as well.

Thanks for the Input. Went into the shops and asked today.

O2 have no 3G coverage at all in Newry according to their sales staff. Orange have 3G coverage in parts of Newry, and according to their checker my area will have "low coverage", so probably of no real use.

Now I am of course wondering if a Iphone makes full sense without any 3G coverage. Any feedback from people who have an Iphoen much appreciated.

Type in your postcode and look for the nearest mast. Make sure the mast details says UMTS and not GPRS. UTMS is for mobile broadband.

Once you found one, it should say which network it belongs too. Ignore Tetra masts, they are for the police.

Remember, it is likely 3, T-Mobile and Orange will all be sharing UMTS masts in the next 18 months. If you have these networks in your area, it will only get better.

Are you getting the phone for her, for internet use on the go or is it for the apps etc? If you live in a low signal area, you may be safer with something like a Blackberry Bold 9700 or a HTC Hero.

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
  • Theres no 3g coverage in Newry at all with O2.

You will get O2 3g Coverage in Warrenpoint however.
