Does anyone else feel like this ?

I'm 'expecting' (as grannies all over the country would say) and have bought a pram, costing £200. Now, I'm delighted to say that my in-laws have announced that they wish to buy the pram as a gift and will be giving me £200 cash to cover the cost.

Why does it feel as if they are actually giving me money ?!! Does anyone else feel the same way ?

I remember feeling the same a few years back when I got a tax rebate......I'm in the same position as I would be if I hadn't paid the money in the first place, and yet getting it back feels like some sort of happy bonus !!

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!! Baby on the way!!!!

Do you feel unhappy about taking the cash? Why don't you ask one of the in-laws to actually come with you when its purchased and they can give you the cash then - make it feel more presenty.
  • i'e felt like that in the past, and it is a happy bonus, although your getting your money back, i suppose its kind of like getting a free pram, which can't be bad whichever way you look at it.
    congratulations by the way,

    Thanks !!

Whatever way you look at it, its very generous and kind of them, and we certainly appreciate it.

Its not really that I feel uncomfortable about it, I just can't work out why in my head it feels as if they are giving me £200 rather than giving me a pram !! Similarly if, for example, I pay for something and then get a refund, I always feel as if I am being given money, rather than just being back in the position I would be in if I hadn't spent the money in the first place.......

    Congrats to you Thriftylady

I know what you mean. I jokingly said to OH last night as I was totting up yet more bank charges, "i wish Id never bothered setting up a standing order now, I would get way more back" Not strictly true, but i kinda meant it

Lynz, I've been away for a week (Thriftybaby was causing me a few problems, and its not even arrived yet!) and then I come back and see you have put a self portrait on your signature. Very nice !! Turn your back for a minute round here and everything changes !!

haaha not a self portrait, but it reminds me what I could look liike if I gave a toss about my appearance instead of sitting in front of the computer all day

it's because you've already bought the thing and not using those actual pounds to buy the pram. if they gave you the £200 and then you went out and bought the pram with the notes you'd feel differently. i feel the same when someone i know asks me to buy something for them and they give the money when I return with the product. if they gave me the money first and i spent that in the shop it wouldn't bother me.

    Congratulations about Thriftybaby.

I know what you mean about feeling it is a bonus rather than the money for a pram.

Either way enjoy it and put that two hundred to good use.

Congratulations - you have made me all nostalgic now. My mum did the same for me and whichever order the money was given it is a really special gift I think to come from the expectant Gps. Even tho we no longer need our wonderful pram I cannot bear to part with it for this reason. Wish I had a bigger shed to keep it in tho!!
