Weird question? Advice required

Hi

Received a letter last week from a well known High Street Bank saying my debt with them was bought by ______ Credit Ltd 4 years ago and that any contact should be with _____ Credit Ltd. Two days later got a letter from ____Credit Ltd saying I owe them £xxxx and to contact them within 7 days to make arrangements. Both letters were near enough identical and used same style envelopes and were both from the debt company.

Now I have never banked or had any Credit cards with this Bank. My name is fairly common, so I phoned them and they asked my name, which I gave them, they then asked for my Date of Birth, which I eventually gave them but very reluctantly, to which the company said "It aint you, I will mark the file and wont send you any more letters, Sorry to bother you."

Now why did I get this letter and is it anything to worry about, i.e. any more letters likely to arrive?

Anyone with any advice please? I am the only person to have lived in this house since it was built and have done so for nearly 5years.

Chances are that someone with the same name as you has applied for credit, not neccesarily at your address though, so dont stress to hard about that

You might want to check your details with Experian, and ask the bank that the CCs were wirth to repair your credit rating if there are things showing up

get them to send you a copy of the signed credit agreement you signed.

When they cant produce this laugh heartily and say "i told you so"

    Good luck

Are they likely to put anything on my credit report? How long does it take to show up?

Tell them that you want written confirmation from them that the debt is not yours and that it will be removed from your credit file. In addition if it has adversley affected any applications recently or in the past you may wish to contact those creditors so that they can now review their decision, which they will do.

you should check your credit report immediately

you can check it for free online - you could do a search - "free credit report" on these forums

Just checked experian now and there is nothing on there, not even a credit search so no ideas why they picked on me.

don't want to be a drama queen, but is it possible that someone has falsely opened an account using your address ? I am only the second person to have lived in my house since it was built and yet last year I started receiving correspondence from a bank relating to an account which had been opened using our address......conveniently for the bank, data protection meant that they weren't able to tell me what sort of 'proof of address' documentation the person had provided when opening the account.....
