  • My Dad made mine, and I helped make the roses which were surprisingly easy to make. It's quite traditional which is what I wanted as I always dreamed of a Royal Icing cake: http://www.photobox.co.uk/my/photo?album_id=25275158&photo_id=1018334088

My sister is making our cake. She's catering the whole wedding. She catered my other sister's wedding and she catered her own wedding. She's a caterer.

I made my cake the morning of my wedding (like I had nothing better to do) then to top it all off I forgot to take it to the reception
  • have started making cakes, and would advise you to buy a cake leveller (£4approx) - looks a bit like a hacksaw but with wire that makes it really easy to split the cake if you are putting butter icing and jam in middle if madeira and to level the top as its so easy to go squint. you tube has lots of demo's, there are quite a few on your topsy turvy cake and you can buy ready made coloured paste and flowers off squires website.

Hi there I am seriously considering making our own fairy cakes. I can make cakes, that is the only thing I am good at!! But was wondering how far in advance I can safely make them - does anyone know? x
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

  • When I asked my boss if she would make flowers for an M&S cake (she is a sugarcrafter) she offered to make the whole cake provided I help. We are making it tomorow (wedding end of January). It is my first attempt at a fruit cake so fingers crossed.

good luck it will turn out great, and i'm sure it will look lovely - its actually easier to make fruit cake than madeira so not much can go wrong really!

Oooh, glad it was nice...I just hope we can make it the same. I'm thinking about maybe a trial run quite soon (partly because I love cake!). My main worry is icing it...how do they make it look so smooth! And I guess you chop the risen tops off the cake (a snack when icing). I've been looking at cakes online for inspiration, and I did see a "topsy turvey" looking wedding cake, which looked quite quirky, so at least if it ends up a bit wonky I can pretend that's the way it was supposed to look!

I know this will sound weird, but I marzipanned the cake before icing, so that it would be smooth.
  • 2 fruit cakes made - just the madeira layer to make nearer the time. It went really well and cakes smell and look fantastic. Not really looking for ward to the sugarcrafting bit but boss is insisting on it so I can say that I made the cake!

We had a good friend make our cake - it was chocolate and banana as my OH doesn't like fruit cake.

I bought the stand on ebay (and resold it afterwards for about the same amount!) and we bought the ornament to go on top that we now have in our home (it's not meant as a cake topper). By not getting cake iced I think you can bypass a lot of the issues of things looking unprofessional - just think of different ways to decorate it...
