what would you do?/repairer broke my hifi....

i bought a hifi and when it broke i sent it to be repaired - it came back with a totally different fault which the repairers had done, which rendered it broke - we were offered 2/3rds of what we paid for it by the insurers but had the choice but to take it and choose a new one, but, we have wrote telling them we arent happy and feel we should be reimbursed for the original insurance policy which we only used for 1month, taxis to/from the shop to take/pick up and take back the hifi...., the 1/3 we lost out on through the insurers fault - we have just received a letter back

they say they admit the new hifi isnt of the same specs, but as we have now used it they cant change it but as a gesture they will give us 4years free insurance, but, i have already got insurance in my household insurance, so, i would prefer the cash for the £86 we are out of pocket...hence, i feel i should reject the offer and try for the cash.....

any advice please? is their offer a sign of guilt do you think? how would you word the letter to them?

thanks

what does the insurance policy which you presumably bought when buying the hi fi actually say? if you chose hi-fi then presumably you knew it was of lower spec when making that decision and arguably accepted their offer of compensation? did you ask why they were only offering 2/3 compensation? why are they deducting 1/3- wear and tear? the fact you had 1 months use of hi-fi and you cannot expect same price for secondhand hi-fi as new one (second hand even if only for 1 month). what was response? why are you only raising issue of taxi fares etc now? was this issue raised before you accepted offer of the other hi fi?. have you contacted cab, local law centre, legal helpline on home contents policy or free union legal helpline (if you have access to these things).

it wasnt a hifi - sorry wrong wording - was a dab stereo system......went through all the ins/outs of my case with them before i went and got the replacement - at first they were only offerring 1/3 of the price and then they upped it to 2/3 so we quickly went to spend it before they took that offer away.......i have put all the details; taxi, etc into a letter to them, which they have replied saying they would give the free insurance.....

what does the insurance policy which you presumably bought when buying the hi fi actually say? WHAT?????????????????? i can assure you i did buy it......just says more or less they replace like for like........this wasnt like for like at all but when we accepted the offer we felt we were banging our heads at a brick wall - we were getting nowhere, hence, when they upped the offer we took it.....

i do indeed have access to another firm - the financial ombudsman - as stated on the back of my insurance policy, so this will be the next port of call.....

    thanks

no offence meant- the word presumably just meant I was assuming you bought the insurance policy at the time you bought product. I was not suggesting you did not buy it. just wanted to make sure I understand your posting fully. Sorry if my posting came across that way.
