want to start own business but i'm at home with a baby

Hi there,

this is probably the wrong place to put this but i'm new to this so please forgive me.

I am at home with my 6 month old little boy and i want to do something to make some extra money to help with bill etc. I'd love to run my own business eventually with my husband but i have no ideas of what to do. I'm generally open to ideas, i love being creative and will work hard to succeed. can't really afford to invest a great deal of money just yet, the idea is to start off small get it off the ground and then my husband could leave work and we could do the business together and make it a real success. my husband is a sales person and my background is sales to but the line of business could be something different, we are both really interested in investing in property but we don't have the capital but we would be really good at renovating houses we think!

i'd love to hear peoples success stories or any ideas you may have?

many many thanks,

Kerry.

i would say stay away from the property game for the moment.

why dont you open an ebay shop? its a good way too make a few extra £ without too much outlay.

use your personal interests,in your business ideas.

the biggest problem of starting your own business is finding the right idea that would work! i have 1 business that will be up and running next month, but i want to venture into something else so im having that same problem at the minute.

what sort of things interest you and your husband?

If your good at renovating houses does that mean that you are artistic? If you are have you thought about buying clothes from charity shops and renovating them by either redying them, adding accessories etc and then resell them back on ebay? Once you get good at that you can start making your own clothes and sell them.

What about being an interior designer? You might have to train first but there are loads of correspondence courses in it.

    Hi there,

There is lots you can do. The trick is to ensure you're not slogging your heart spending all day physically working because you won't be able to give it the time you need.

I'm starting out as what's known as an internet marketer, beacuse I can do it when I get home from my full time job. It takes some thinking about and people are making an honest living off it. The information is quite easy to find

A word of advice though, steer clear of all the " I made £30000 in one month while I slept" type talk on the ebay pages. Someone probably did, but doubtful it was that person. The big players will tell you there's no such thing as a workable get rich quick scheme. Please stay away from such offers. Like I say it can be a good way to earn a living but you have to keep your eyes open and trust your gut if something looks too good to be true.

It's a very slow start but I sold a product to someone over 8000 miles that I didn't create so it can be done. It is really slow at the moment but apparently that's normal.

I can show you somewhere to start looking that will give you some information for free (just to prove you can learn for free) but I'm not sure whether it break forum rules. If you want PM me and I can show you the link and some of the things I've done that haven't cost me a penny.

Property is good but don't just jump in. A lot of people get burned in this game because they don't understand the market in sufficient detail to make an informed decision about whether the conditions are right for the house you are looking to pick up. A good book to read is Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T Kiyosaki. Read it and re-read it and you'll see what I'm on about.

Good luck though and enjoy these precious months and years with your baby

Agree with all this. Initially making a few ££ and finding your feet is a good way to get in. Set your sights low and just try amd make say £50 a week from an ebay shop. I'd agree that renovating property in a flat market can be hard to make a decent margin.

Have a think about what you can sell on Ebay at a profit. Not what you own, but what you can buy trade / secondhand. Have a look at what things sell, the variety is mind blowing.

Competition can be fierce, but just remember you only want to make £50 a week profit. If you get going on this then you should find if moving the business to the next level is for you. Good luck !

I have done the same as ordinary joe in the post above. I am a gasman and after the birth of my son my partner decided to stay at home. We had a small car. No good for a growing family. One wage coming in and 4 mouths to feed, so i set myself a challenge to earn some extra cash just to make ends meet... Didn't want to stuff envelopes and i hated all the "I will make you rich in 12 days etc".

After hours of searching i stumbled across a product that has a massive target audience. The price of a packet of fags membership and a unique product, but i had never sold anything... Ex navy engineer, gasman.... Can i do it???
I thought for a couple of weeks and thankfully after a late night on american bottled beer and slightly worse for wear i signed up. Shrugged it off for a week and then thought ok i will give it 3-6 months and if it don't work out then at least i have give it a go. I called it my challenge. :j

9 months later, I no longer have a 7 yr old small car on the drive. Its a brand new mondeo. Ok its not a merc and i havent bought it outright, but the money i now earn pays the small loan, insurance, running costs and some other bills. My 2nd income is rises between 10 and 40% every month and the cheque is here like clockwork. Its an awesome business and my only regret is i wasted time at the start. Bye the way i do my promoting by word of mouth and pc. Job done and all the promoting tools and back up comes at the price of 20 fags... :rotfl:

I wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose and go with your gut instinct. Better still drink some beer first...

    richard. :D

P.s My father bought a franchise and is now almost crippled due to hard manual labour. He is now doing this with my help so he can cut down on manual work. Also my other family members have started to join me as they have seen me progress and the cheques grow.

Loads of need for ChildMinders, work from home and hours to suit you, after my search to find one if I didn't have a child with special needs I would do it myself.
One day I might be more organised...........

so whats the unique product then???
  • so whats the unique product then???

Yes, its unique, but i can't post it here. The rules forbid it. I was however, trying to show you something positive from an average persons perspective who also tried a home income opportunity and is being successful at it...
I got my ideas from this forum and found the product later.
All i am saying is do your research on the company you choose to go with or be realistic if you choose to go it alone.
Nothing is free but there are some excellent opportunity's out there. I made a point of staying with a UK company.

I wish ya the best of luck.

    Richard...
