I used the Heart Internet and currently very happy:
http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/free-web-hosting.html
I had to pay for domain registration which costs very little (you'll need to do this anyway), but after that it's free. I tried a site out myself and I'm on a committee for my local ramblers group (Ramblers is a charity). I'm happy enough to see our website moved to them.0 -
thanks for the heads up.
any suggestions on sub domain space? I use to use freeservers, but their sign up is a mare at present."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0 -

Wow! That's amazing - I didn't know you could get webspace for nothing! I've just signed up to Be broadband - the first ISP I've used that don't provide any free space, so this will be really useful. Thanks!
The Heart Internet page says that it provides 100MB bandwidth, which seems rather small. Does anyone know if that's an hourly, daily or monthly limit?
And... sorry if this is a dumb question... but the Heart page says you get 1000 mailboxes, and the 000webhost pages says you get 5 email addresses and IMAP support. What would you use this for? (I said it was a dumb question!)
At the moment I have a domain name, which forwards email to a free email provider (GMX) that supports IMAP access, so I can pick up/send mail using an email client on my PC. What could I use the free hosting mailboxes for and how would that work?
And (last question!) my domain currently points to my (old) ISP's webspace. If I type "mydomain.com" into a browser I see my site but the address changes to "myisp.co.uk/freewebspace/user/12345" (or something similar). Is there a way to keep my domain name in the address bar if I use one of these free hosts?0 -
The only important limitation with the Free Heart web-hosting is the bandwidth. I presume it is 100 MB per month because that's what the paid-for hosting is measured in.
That seems fair to me: if you have a small site with little traffic, then they give you it free - but if you get lots more traffic they want to charge you something for it (£2.49, probably plus VAT, per month gets you 30 GB of data transfer per month). They have data transfer and server and other costs...0 -
Fair enough, but with 000webhost you get 100GB/month - 1024 times as much! It just seemed odd that there was such a difference.0

I just googled 000webhost and this rather worrying blog post came up about them allegedly trying to install malware last year:
http://hype-free.blogspot.com/2009/01/000webhostcom-trying-to-install-malware.html
Might all be sorted out now. Could have been a mistake. Might be a disgruntled competitor posting the blog. Who knows. Just thought I'd mention it.0
