Help and advice requiered - Shops mistake

Hi
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, so please bear with me and I apologise in advance.
Around two months ago I purchased a pair of Ugg boots for my wife from a local designer shop. I paid using a £50 voucher I had and paid the difference using my switch card. (£75).
My wife went back into the shop today and was told that at the time the shop assistant had made a mistake as she was new and had not processed the card payment correctly and that we still owed them the £75.
I checked my online statement and the payment did not go out. I never noticed it as it was over the weekend and sometimes my online bank takes a few days to catch up, and also I was paid the following week so I missed it.
Checking my receits at home I have two, one switch receit and one printed receit from the shop. The switch one says declined at the bottom, obviously the part where she messed up, whilst the other one says that we paid £50 voucher and the £75 difference and owe nothing.
My question is where do I stand? Is it my place to go back and pay this, or would this be seen as their mistake in letting me leave with the goods and printing out a receit that says I have paid. Is it akin to a shop displaying the incorrect price on an item and the customer being entitled to getting the item at that price?
Thanks for reading and I hope you can help.

hi
Morally you should pay, not sure how they knew to connect your wife to the said transaction though...
If it was me....and I have a receipt showing I have paid ie till receipt....card receipt shows payment not processed....I would not pay now.
I have worked in retail management, a girl who worked for me on old system managed to process a transaction for £90.00 and actually entered £9.00 instead...thus meaning the customer got a bargain....this was a regular customer and I was unable at a later date to persue this as she had left with the item...I checked with head office etc...
Tough call...perhaps if you wish to continue shopping there then pay...if not then dont and bargain Ugg boots!!!
Not sure if the can persue you legally, perhaps check with consumer direct...0 -
Did your wife go back to return the boots or did they recognise her and ask for the money?? I really don't know where you stand. There is a website http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk that might be able to help, the also have a helpline that might be useful. HTH0

They recognised her as she was in the shop with me trying them on a few days before we bought them. I know ethically I should pay, and my intention is to do so, but I just wondered legally where I stood.
Thanks.;)0 -
I would pay- otherwise your wife may find it embarrasing or difficult to go back and visit the shop. But I would want to speak to the manager and fight my "I don't want to pay, this is your fault not mine" corner first- just to see how far I could push it!0

I would pay also - the shop assistant may have been made to pay the difference from her own pocket. It's not unheard of with privately owned businesses.0

Honestly, I don't think I would pay. It was their fault, not yours. If they had short changed you and you wanted YOUR money back days later, I don't think they'd entertain it!
I also think that it was unprofessional to approach your wife in the way that they did, JMO. If I was the shop owner, I would let the girl know that she processed the transaction incorrectly, ensure she is properly trained and then write the loss off. Just me.Trying hard to money save....0 -
I'm an honest person, and this happened to me when I purchased something from an opticians, they telephoned me and told me they hadn't charged me for some eye drops and could i go in as soon as possible and pay for them. My reply was it is your mistake but as its only £5 I will, but when I am ready as a special trip means paying parking fees. With your situation I would be inclined to not pay. They should have checked that the transaction was processed properly and if you were visiting the area for the weekend and didn't return to the shop there would be nothing they could do. It all depends whether your wife is happy not buying from there again?0

So, what's the outcome, Parisayo?Trying hard to money save....0
