they will play on a normal 4:3 tv but probably with black bars at the top and bottom of the picture, you can adjust this with most dvd players but then you will miss a small piece of the picture on either side.

not too worried about black bars top and bottom, more concerned about the sides

our dvd player is set to 16:9 but we can change this to letterbox, would this negate the missing picture problem at the sides?

yes, if you just toggle between the settings on your dvd player it should work, even having it set to 16:9 might just stretch the picture upwards, keeping the full picture at the sides but just reducing the black bars at the top and bottom, otherwise just set it to letterbox like you said and you will see the full picture. I think it just depends on your tv and dvd player.
