Options
Just wondering if theres any heads up from people in the know?

Im using jobsgopublic at the mo and the guardian, but not finding much sadly that I could do ( v little direct experience in environment, but not really able to take a pay cut etc )

Any ideas ?

There always seems to be a lot of interest in green & ethical jobs. But all jobs will never be green/ethical. But you can have a personal impact in how you do any job.

Currently my OH has a job involving travel all over Europe. Because of how we organise things he saves more than 160 flying hours a year compared to other similar people on the project. Where possible taxi's are shared, even if it means waiting a few minutes. Also staying in hotels in walking distance of work. Some hotels now have bins with seperate sections for recycling. Lots of hotel rooms have all the lights come on as you enter, we shut off as many as we can to still leave a sensible working environment. The hotels also have the labels for the towels, so we reuse them until they need washing. We try to eat vegetarian food/organic food when possible to support the restaurants providing this, and we also try to eat local food (local food helps to reduce food miles, vegetarian food uses less energy/water to be produced, and organic food less chemicals).

So I think anyone can have a personal impact in most jobs, just with the little things. Also some ideas do catch on gradually.

Because of current lifestyle we've also been able to reduce from being a 2 car family, to a one car family.

Personally I think the only way we'll get a real enviromental impact is if more people become as green and ethical as they in all types of jobs.

Sorry if it's not really answered your question.

    Hi,

I signed up to a newsletter from https://www.environmentjobs.co.uk most of these jobs are out of my league but you may find something suitable turn up on there.

Another idea would be to look at community development work (this is what I do). Throughout the country there are Rural Community Councils sometimes they are called ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England). If you google your county followed by RCC or Rural Community Council you should come up with a website.

There are often many jobs as project officer etc. on new projects - most funders have requirements that the project be environmentally sustainable so you will often find that there are strong 'green' elements running through the project. The only problem with these jobs are that as they are usually funded posts they are usually relatively short term contracts - 2 or 3 years (5 if you are really lucky).

If you don't mind saying roughly where you live I will have a scout around and see if I can find any relevant websites.

I hope that you are successful in your job hunting - I have been in my post (seeting up a loacal food project) for just over a year and it has pretty much changed my life in a very positive way.

I had a nose at enviromentjobs too, but sadly its all a bit out of my league until I accept a 10k pay cut :D

Im in London, so not much rural stuff going on.

I've always wanted to work in enviromental law, but my degree wasnt a good enough grade to get onto the law conversion, so I left it and fell into other stuff, which isnt for me. As much as Id like to make a green impact at my work place, sadly its just not a priority and it does sicked me to see people just chucking empty printer cartridges in the bin ( i do salvage some & send to NSPCC though :) )

lynzpower, there are a couple of links now posted in the "Useful links" sticky at the top of the board. Have a look to see if any are of use to you.
