Get your CV upto date and create a letter offering yourself to companies asking for a job, the job centre can help you in the creation of the letter and your CV. I always for the job centre to be a waste of time with the jobs on offer and they never actually found me an interview.
Try not to make the letter sound lke your begging for a job be being more specific in what you want to do "I'll do anything" doesnt look good but if you ask for a trainee mechanic or trainee network administrator then they may decide they need your services. Also mention that you would be interested in an apprenticeship and see what they can do.
Every job I have had has come from people I have known, they werent really looking for anyone so didnt have the job centre adverts but they were going thinking about taking someone on to make the workload easier and it was just the right place and time.
I saw that Duder was a CV creator in another post maybe duder could offer soe better advice, if your grades are poor dont tell them about them. Only telling them about your good grades and not your bad grades isnt lieing getting 5 c's looks better than a bucket load of f's but do include your maths, science and english grades. emphasise your good points and forget about the bad ones.
Get yourself a suit, shirt and tie and make sure yours shoes are clean smile and relax in interviews. turning up to an interview smart even for working in a garage will give a good impresion as soon as they spot you as alot of people wont even make the effort. Some of the people interviewed at place Ive work were turning up in shorts and tshirts, trackies, their interviews were very short as the boss wasnt interested. IT people dress fromt he waist up shirt tie and anything below but that is only once you have the job.
Good luck
maybe post your location and someone could put you in contact with companies, I have seen it happen on other forums.0 -
ask at your local college my local college does work based learning which is like an Apprenticeship
Also my son has nearly finished the first diploma in IT and he didnt need brilliant grades to get in and some that didnt meet the grades still got in
I would just ring up and speak to an adviser or go to one of the college open days
There are so many places that does Apprenticeships dont give up
Good luck0 -

Connexions should be giving you a lot more advice and suggestions. You may want check the apprenticeships website, not sure how good it is though
https://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/youngpeople/whatnext/formpage1.htm0 -
have you applied for EMA if your under 19 and it depends on your family income you could get £10-£30 weekly
My son gets this plus they dont count any earnings he has(he works part time)
I dont know your situation but my son went to college straight from school i dont know if that makes a difference
i have just found the website www.direct.gov.uk/ema
you could read up on it and see if your entitled to it
if you cant get it im sure you can apply for a grant to help with the fees but again speak to the adviser at the college as im not too sure0 -
I was under the impression that if you're under 19 then your college courses are free. Has this changed?? What colleges used to do though was charge a 'deposit' and charge for materials - they didnt charge for the actual courses though.
Also, as someone has mentioned there is EMA. You don't get this if you have an apprenticeship though. With an apprenticeship your employer sponsors you at college for one day a week so that you can get paper qualifications and they also pay for the college course, as well as giving you a training allowance.
Our local authority is advertising apprenticeships to start in September in business, IT and various other options. Perhaps you could look on your LA website.
Also as others have said, try and get Connexions to give you more advice/info. Do they have a library of careers info? Usually if you spend time browsing in there something interesting will jump out at you!
Don't give up, there's something out there for you.~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0 -
yes i thought they were free
my son is 17 nearly finished a 1yr course (free)
in September his doing a 2 year course and they havnt said anything about fees but im just wondering as he will be 19 during his course will he have to pay when his 19 until the end of the course0 -
loopylass, if your son starts a 2 year course before he is 19 then he won't have to pay for the whole 2 years. I had this with my son who is now 20. One thing that did stop for him at 19 was obviously the child benefit, tax credits and EMA. He had to apply for an Adult Learning Grant which again is £30 pw but assessed on his income not mine. He paid no fees for his course though and the college awarded him some hardship funds for materials (art course).
Mind you, I did hear something about the tax credits and CB changing to encourage youngsters to stay on in education so check that out properly when the time comes. HTH~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0 -
check the local papers...power stations and chemical companies etc offer great apprenticeships and are normally putting adverts in around this timeSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0
