Well done all of you, keep them coming!! I love reading about people who have achieved the dream, helps those of us plugging away at getting there :D

Cattie yours is a great post, as another single mfw I understand the pride in going it alone, I love sharing on here with like minded people as most in rl just don't get it. My Mum, bless her, is convinced I must be up to my eyes in debt or sat counting my pennies every night to try and pay my bills, purely because I'm a single mum, I wish I could get her to stop worrying about me, I've tried to explain that I *choose* not to spend loads of money on new clothes etc rather than not being able to buy them, but like you I don't particularly want material stuff, for me the pleasure in overpaying far outweighs a new top or a dvd anyday :D

  • We paid off our mortgage last November (I was 37 and hubby 42). We have spent most of this year building our savings back up, it goes up very nicely when you don't have that huge direct debit to pay every month.

I remember the first few months being sooo happy when we got paid and had most of it left.

We are having our garden "re-done" next week. That wouldn't have been something we could have done before as I think of that as a kind of luxury. Thats the difference you see, you can do the things you want to instead of the things you have to.

  • We're not MF yet, but our reason for wanting to get there ASAP is (amongst other things) to buy this:

or something very like it, and sail from Scotland to the Caribbean every winter!

  • Sorry to be incredibly nosey but I just wondered at what age you were when you managed to clear your mortgages?

I'm 28 and have 27 years left on mine so have only really started chipping away at the interest but am keen to use my offset account to try and bring the interest charges down.

  • These are absolutely fascinating to read and act as a huge incentive! I am aiming for clearance some point next year, so that's our focus! I only realised 2 years ago how much we could save re a mortgage - until then we were on a fixed deal and felt that was all we needed to do - but would mean 25 years of mortgage to go. When we had the lightbulb moment, we were fortunate in that we already saved, so we decided to focus on clearing our mortgage totally; something we've not regretted in the slightest - and reading other posts on how life is "better" is really encouraging. We're aiming to be mortgage free before I'm 33 - Currently just 31.

Predicted mortgage clearing 03/2047 - now looking at 02/2045

Aims: 1) To pay off mortgage within 20 years - 2037
  • Lovely motivator to those who still have aspirations to be MF.

Starting with good intentions is easy, having the will power and determination to carry on through the years thats the real test.

Im feeling motivated now for when I finish work and get home today :)
