You miss my point. What I meant was that a large percentage of those currently claiming incapacity benefit are not in fact disabled in the usual sense, just structurally unemployed. This is a one off situation. They won't be replaced later by a similar group.Trying to keep it simple...0

The industries which we've lost were heavy industries and the people who worked in them were more prone to back injury and pulmonary disorders than are workers in lighter service industries.
Whenever the DWP have conducted home checks 98% of claimants comply with the criteria.
Whenever the DWP conduct Periodic Reviews for DLA TWICE as many claimants have their awards raised because they are understanding their needs than have their awards lowered because they are overstating their needs.
There are of course more IB claimants in that age group because year on year from 1944 to 1954 there were more people actually born. Just take yourself off to a local museum and see the size of sacks farm workers used to deal with try lifting a modern bag of cement and compare that to the bags of cement 25 yrs ago.
Those post war baby boomers have now reached the age when they are worn down by disability. They have paid into the system and do not deserve to be sneered at by cynical fools. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Quite so and since we don't have such industries any more, these people are unlikely to be replaced by new IB claimants in the future.Trying to keep it simple...0 -

Having lower death rates from breast cancer doesn't mean there are fewer people needing long term care. Those who are aware of the situation know that breast cancer survivors continue to make greater use of the NHS than people who have never had cancer. Because these are damaged individuals society needs to be aware that the disability benefits system will continue to be needed to support those who through no fault of their own, need to rely on the state. Because we are not as a society making sufficient efforts to prevent people being born disabled, or prevent them becoming disabled we will have an ever increasing number of disabled people who we refuse to let die.
File on four today shows just how poorly society is providing appropriate support Carers 'hit by NHS funding crisis'
Perhaps there is a move to reduce the effect of autism but Brain food: Why the Government wants your child to take Omega-3 ... will probably end up as too little too late.
The fact that 50% of the over 65 population consider themselves disabled will not disappear if you simply move the retirement age to 68.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

lucky then we will be getting the heating allowance 8 yrs before we retire, as you get it from 60.
we can also get pension credit form being 60, which will top our income up to £200 that is based on todays rate who knows it might still be the same in 25yrs when i get to 60.
i will also add if you have not joined a private pension DONT, i have found as a home carer, if you dont have it they give you everything, and if you save all your life you get nothing. so the moral is spend what you get enjoy and sponge like the rest who have there heads screwed on the right way..
just a shame the gov keep giving all our CASH (income support) and NHS away to people who have not done 1 days work in this country0 -
You can count on pension credit and winterfuel being raised from 60 to save money, they're only paid from 60 now as thats the minimum age for claiming a state pension.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

The above rings a bell. The way it seems to me is that you either have piles of savings, investments or pension funds or you have nothing. So many folks like myself fall in the middle, the self employed. In my case,it`s fairly small pension pots{though to me they look pretty big}that will allow a cr---y annuity, own modest house but paid for,and fairly good savings. It`s feeling like I am somewhere in the middle.I looked at the pension credits web site and although we have no chance of getting any,I was amazed to see that for every £500 you have saved the government assumes that it will pay £52 a year interest income. Now where in the world does a bank account pay 10% tax free interest.Anyone know?----lol0 -

The idea behind paying was that pensioners had trouble affording the heating, so instead of trying to means test it and probably make more of a cockup of it than normal , they decied it was too much of a vote winner not to pay.
I agree with you though, it should be means tested (against pension credit entitlement) and withheld from those in nursing homes and they obviously dont need it to heat their own homes.
When in a care home, though, if you receive Pension Credit or I-JSA, they dont pay Winter Fuel.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
