    Baking powder is generally more expensive than bicarb as it is a mixture of bicarb and a raising agent ( which is often cream of tartar (tartaric acid ). When the two are mixed and wetted they react and give off carbon dioxide which causes the product to fizz and the cake (or whatever to rise)
    My "supercook" baking powder contains ..................
    Wheat flour and
    raising agents: disodium diphosphate, sodium hyrogen carbonate (which is another name for bicarb )

    Cream of tartar :
    white crystalline powder. Chemically it is potassium hydrogen tartrate, KC 4 H 5 O 6 , the acidic potassium salt of tartaric acid . It is used as the leavening agent in baking powders.

    Bicarb or baking soda as the americans call it : Sodium hydrogen carbonate, chemical compound, NaHCO 3 , a white crystalline or granular powder, commonly known as bicarbonate of soda or baking soda. It is soluble in water and very slightly soluble in alcohol. It evolves carbon dioxide gas when heated above about 50°C, a property made use of in baking powder, of which it is a component. It is also decomposed by most acids; the acid is neutralized and carbon dioxide is given off. The major use of sodium bicarbonate is in foods, e.g., baked goods.

    Borax:
    Chemical compound, Na 2 B 4 O 7 ·10H 2 O;
    Borax is a colorless, crystalline salt; it also occurs as a white powder. Is widely and diversely used, e.g., as a mild antiseptic, a cleansing agent, a water softener>

    Soda or Washing soda
    chemical compound, Na 2 CO 3 , soluble in water and very slightly soluble in alcohol. Pure sodium carbonate is a white, odorless powder that absorbs moisture from the air, has an alkaline taste, and forms a strongly alkaline water solution. It is one of the most basic industrial chemicals. Sodium carbonate decahydrate, Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O, is a colourless, transparent crystalline compound commonly called sal soda or washing soda. Because seaweed ashes were an early source of sodium carbonate, it is often called soda ash or, simply, soda.It is also used in processing wood pulp to make paper, in making soaps and detergents, in refining aluminum, in water softening,

    Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but DON'T use washing soda crystals in the bath - they're far too strong and will damage your skin!
  • relaxing bath - lavender, candles, soothing classical music, and a glass of Australian shiraz - heaven!!

    I thought this was the main ingredient of bath salts? I seem to remember making some blue peter style when I was a kid.
  • If you have room for growing things, you don't have to shell out for essential oils.Pick a bunch of what you fancy.Tie it with string, and hang it from the tap so that the water runs through it,this works really well with leafy one's like lemon balm and mint.Or you can wrap some in a hankie like a bouquet garnie, bruise it a little first to help the oils to come out. This is great for lavender and rose.Citrus skins also work well.

  • Magnesium Chloride. available by the 25kg bag from animal food/agricultural supplies depots also known as DEAD SEA SALTS. around £7ish bag.

    For general relaxation as well as for back pain and arthritic or muscle pain and stiffness either magnesium chloride or Epsom salts may be used. Both are excellent to soak in a hot bath with the addition of up to 1 kg of magnesium salts.

    If you regularly have a bath in Dead Sea Salts the magnesium will be absorbed through your skin so improving your anti inflammatory status.

    It is particularly useful for those under stress there is also some evidence it's useful for those suffering from Bruxism (toothgrinding/jawclenching.) It's particularly useful also for those wanting to improve skin condition.
