Removing labels before recycling cans

Who removes the labels from tin cans before recycling? I always wash mine out and remove the labels, but wonder whether removing the labels is really necessary. I suppose I just think it looks messy chucking out a can with the label still attached but don't know enough about the actual recycling process to know whether cans with labels attached cause problems.

  • I've never removed the labels. They get a rinse out but I don't take the labels off.

I always remove the labels too - basically not sure but don't want them leaving my bin behind because I've don't it wrong lol. Always think that if the labels are off then they can be recycled as paper instead of going into some kind of metal melting process.

Could be wrong BUT it doesn't take that much time to do .

Our local council advised us it is not necessary to remove labels.

I always remove the labels before putting cans in the recycling box-I don't want the neighbours to see how many cans of value tinned tomatoes we get through each week!

I always remove the labels because I recycle the paper, if you're not recycling the paper though you can leave it on as its burnt off in the smelting process.

I would say its important to wash them through though.

I rinse mine out and squash them labels and all.
  • We always remove the labels from Tins,Jars, Bottles etc either before or after rinsing, and as long as the labels are paper and not plastic like what is often round Coke or some Squash bottles. We then put all the paper labels in our buckets that we use for peelings etc and they go over to our allotment and get composted.

Label usually floats off while I'm washing it, otherwise I leave it on.
