how to make a nut something (no idea what its called)

Many many years ago my dad had some nuts abroad which he really like, yesterday in london i saw various people selling them from carts (i didnt buy any, ive watched far too many programs on cart sellers hygine!).
They cook them there and then (well stir nuts in the "stuff" over heat) then sell in cups still warm, I assume there is a lot of sugar involved and they end up with a kind of brown (but not chocolate brown) lumpy coating.
Does anyone know what im talking about? I would love to make some for my dad as a gift but i doubt "nuts with a brownish coating" would bring up much on google!
Thanks
