To make the site look popular.

Only amatuer type sites use visable counters as it makes them look good, so mike is actually right, it means nothing!

?????????You state its a 'required' service?make your mind up.

I have just searched for fake payslips on google, interesting to note that on this site it has a visitor counter. Not sure how long that counter has been going for, but 660,000+ visitors.

And this is what ou can buy:

The 660k visitors just to this site shows it's a "required" service.

It even has a salary counter in which you can play around with figures to come up with the required wage you need.

Another brilliant thing about high prices I guess.

This can be a big problem for landlords too, luckily my wife was aware of it and last time we advertised for tenants she cross referenced the (false) wageslips of the potential tenants to their bank statements and they did not match up. If it wasn't for her vigilance we may have ended up with tenants probably not being able to pay the rent.

Mortgage lenders have to do the same to weed out the con men (and women), trouble is I don't think they were that bothered.

Hopefully this is more of a yesterday problem, although with some chickens yet to come home to roost of course. When prices were going up 20% year after year, then borrowing the maximum possible made some sense in a gambling sort of way. Those days are surely over for a good while now.

    And they'd bother doing that...why?
If a site only showed say 10 visits, people would be less likely to use it than if it showed 100's of thousands,so the site owner sets the site meter at a high figure from the start.

    Oooh, that's so cunning. ;)

I do hope you're right, otherwise our housing market is well up the spout. :)

i think you've confused yourself here Mewbie - why don't you use your other ID btw?

20% year after year - when you say year after year do you mean one year or it happened for a number of years.

I thin you're confusing your posters, chucky.

Prices went up by 20% or more in seceral years in many places - how do you think some places ended up wwith prices going up 400 or 500% in less than a decade in some places?

There is a website that for £1600 will furnish you with UK passport, d.license, P45, wage slips, N.I. number and banks statements. In effect a whole new identity.
My job involves looking for these docs and I think that the career crooks are probably getting some success but I do find an awful lot of "opportunist" fraud but rarely do they involve forged UK docs- most fraudulent docs come from abroad and these have changed over time. 5 years ago it was always Nigerian passports, 3 years ago it was French and Belgian and now it is Latvian and Slovakian. There are also quite a few Illegals from the Russian federation that have entered the UK on Norwegian docs but they are very easy to spot as they all have cleaning jobs and what Norwegian would come to London to clean ?
It amazes me that they all get through UK border control and I only spot them when they come to my workplace for financial services.
The cases of mortgage fraud that I deal with from time to time nearly always involve the broker, in fact I can't think of a time when it hasn't.
Because most crooks do and say the same things it does make it easier to deal with, the clever ones, well they are clever for a reason and are harder to stop. Great thread.
  • It never ceases to amaze me that people will lie to take on debt, to pay for something that is way over-valued.

Never underestimate the stupidity of people.

I wouldnt call finding somewhere to live stupid.
