I wanna buy a mountain bike

I want to get on my bike and am looking to get a bike in the £750 - £850 range.
Any advice out there? All the boys at work are hardcore and can't talk to me about anything worth less than £2000! I am a beginner at MTBs, although fit from other sports and want to
a) Ride to and fro to work on it (< 5 miles)
b) Go out trail riding with 12 year old daughter, and
c) Maybe, just maybe do some gentle off-roading myself...
Sensible advice welcomed on makes/models, whys and wherefores.

Well I do go MTbing but to be quite frank as a first timer upto £500 would be more realistic a price to start off with, if you are offroading all the time rear suspension is a must as you will mostly be stood above the saddle and its more to with taking shock away from the knees.
If on road no rear shocks needed front suspension is ok but good forks are a must with our roads, also a good saddle, and road tyres or face coming off on tarmac with nobblys, Ouch many a gravel rash had, also maybe disk brakes they do tend to have some good brakes out nowadays im still on blocks but £20 quid a block and they actually work in the rain.
Just go out to loads of shops and do some bike sitting, most importantly dont get grip shift as everytime you pull away a gear change is on the cards, also is 21gears ok with you? and dont change gears incorrectly or you will twist the chain and stretch it aswell.
Have a look here http://www.whatmtb.com/
Edit:, Changing Gears, Its not 1234567 then 2nd cog then 3rd cog to get to 21st gear its, 1234 change to 2cog 567 then change to 3rd cog so that the chain keeps straight.0 -
For 'some gentle off-roading' you don't need rear suspension. It will be just waste of money, extra weight and trouble.0

Have a look at wiggle if you dont mind buying online.
Also its well worth finding your local bike shop as at least you will be able to try out in the shop and they usually offer some good advice on size and what is best for your needs
