32" 1080P TV with built-in blu-ray @ Makro

In next week's Makro mail they are advertising a UMC 32" 1080p LCD TV with built-in blu-ray player for £399.99 plus vat. This is just what I've been looking and I'll be down there on Wednesday to buy one. I've checked the web and no-one else is selling this combination. Sounds great!:j

  • Forgive me for sounding unduly cynical here, but if only one place is selling something then there is usually a very good reason for that :rotfl:

    It is a fantastic deal.
Unfortunately I need to add in the BUT I would never recommend combination TV/Optical drive machines. They have the great advantage of less cables and space usage yes.
The drawback is reliability. Optical drives have a tendency to fail in such models. Also remember MAKRO add on VAT so to total price is £460. You can get a Branded LG 1080p 32" for about £399 form Currys and a Philips Blueray machine for £99 in ASDA just now. £40 dearer but all branded and a better choice TBH.

Tesco and a lot of the computer box shifters sell UMC a well respected and sometimes sought after budget brand.

I don't think he's talking about the brand, I think he's talking about the combination - but I could be wrong, I often am ;)

UMC is far from a respected brand, it's more like a factory outlet label for a group of Hong Kong based factories. Expect nothing in terms of warranty, customer service, instruction manual etc.

£399 plus VAT is actually above average for an unbranded 32 inch LCD these days. Prices have come down a lot. If you are canny you might spot one with a free Blueray player in the runup to crimbo.

As the previous poster says, integrated disc players are often very flimsy. If the blueray player does break within warranty you have to send your whole TV off for repair not just the blueray player, so spending an extra 40 quid for LG & Philips, whose warranties tend to be longer anyway and will offer a faster turnaround for repairs, is a far better option imo.

That said, if you're careful not to break it & keep it clean and free of dust etc. Then there's no reason that a cheapo TV combo player will not work perfectly for years, just don't get one if you've got kids or an OH that tends to break things...
