Need to buy a New Sewing Machine (cheap)- where from?

Hi guys thought this may be the best place to post as all you clever crafters are on here!

My mum needs a sewing machine, she will only use it for taking in clothes (lucky her!) and making simple curtains and the like, so nothing too fancy and I was planning to buy her one for christmas. She has hinted at a second hand sewing machine, but she has always had loads of second hand ones that have not lasted very long, and I would like to treat her to one if I can find one reasonable enough .

Can you help, do you know where I should try?

Thanks in advance x

Edit: Do you know of any brands I should stay clear of or that are worth having?

My local Lidl had a pretty good looking sewing machine with loads of stitch options for around £57 about 10 days ago. I would have got one for myself but I only had a backpack with me and was cycling home at night along the canal towpath! :rotfl: Keep thinking I should go back to see if its still there...

I have this one and it's brilliant, very simple but I haven't had any problems at all. I'd reccomend Brother as their customer service is great (I used to work for them!)

That offer was only on for a week

It was a knitting and sewing deal, they also had huge sewing kits for £2.99 each and different yarns for £1.99 or £2.99 for 4 balls. I stocked up! DH wouldn't let me have a new sewing machine, I only got my 'old' one in May though so he did have a point :rotfl:

I own 2 Brother sewing machines which I have had for about 25 and 16 years respectivly and not had any problems with either of them, so when I saw this I thought at less than £70 was excellent value

Thanks for the help guys! I have some options there - I expected that I would have to pay about £60 at least so these are good options.
I like the look of all of them - now I have options I dont know which one to go for!

I'll have a bit of a hunt about, I could fance the Dunelm mill one as there is a store about 30 miles from me and I have never been, it would be a good excuse to visit!

    Thanks again guys.
