There is an interesting independent shop near mine, very old fashioned. Has fruit pies, loaves and bread etc on one counter, and odd looking meat things which i think mostly old people eat ??? on the other counter, and things in jars behind the counter, staff dressed in white coats. Im sure you would be asked 'ARE YOU LOCAL?' if you went in there. (anyone else a fan of the league of gentlemen???) 'Open all hours' also springs to mind...
I make my own bread rolls, and most of the time make bread. I tend to get meat from independent people like a butcher i use, or the market. I dont like the supermarkets either.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My Mum will have me believe that Farmers markets are expensive and that all the food there is organic and therefore more expensive than supermarkets. Will be going to ours on Wednesday to see for myself.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I'm also on the verge of changing my shopping habits completely, I now hate supermarkets (I used to be in them every week as well!).
Went to a small greengrocers on Saturday and found some wonderful, healthy, fresh, cheap fruit & veg.

We have an "egg man" (yes really!), who comes to our workplace.
The price is eggscellent 55p for half doz, £1.10 for doz, and the eggs themselves are cracking, huge and really nice tasting.

Thanks - wouldn't have thought trying a butchers!0 -
I popped into the bakers again yesterday morning, but was much later than usual and to my surprise found a butchers next door to it. I must have lived in the area for 6 months now, but never knew it existed!!!
I am at work while they are open, but the sign said they are open on Saturday mornings too, so will pop in then to test it out.
Will also look for eggs - I hadn't thought of butchers selling them, but it makes sense!
Rxr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
You are so lucky to have a butchers near you as we have none. Think the supermarkets are responsible for this! I can buy frozen organic meat from a local farm shop luckily. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
