If you ask at the bakery dept in your local Tesco they willl let you have some fresh yeast free. Sainsburys give you some for a small charge (usually about 25p).0

Thanks so much everyone. Some good points here. We did use dried yeast but does anyone know where you can buy fresh?
also I think maybe the salt came into contact with the sugar so that won't have helped.
Will try again.:j
I buy mine from Morrisons 45p and you get 4 cubes of about 30g in each. Just put in the freezer if you are not going to be using it all.
When making bread, I put in 2tsp of salt in. I just mix it through with the dry flour.Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -
Following some excellent advice from everyone I am very glad to report Dad and I made the bagels again today. The dough rose perfectly and they are absolutely delicious!
Thank you so much to all who helped us.:T0 -
Hi Loubylou,
I'm glad you sorted it out.
I've added this post to your previous thread so that the Old Stylers who helped can see your reply.

Bagels are something I've never thought of making but I think I'm going to give it a try. Do you think it would be possible to halt the process after they come out of the pan of water, then keep in fridge over night and bake in the morning (so they're fresh for breakfast?)0
