Yay, grown Rocket from a pundshop packet of seeds, and its gone mental, there are little flowers starting to bud on the top of the plants- eek, I have pulled half of them off, thinking this will mean they're going to seed, like leeks/onions do.
Have also noticed my coriander doing the same, nooooo!!!! If poss I want to keep them both going throughout the summer, without them going to seed. what can I do, or is it too late to save them...
Thanksyall.

I've got the same problem as you. I'm growing them in pots and they are both producing/trying to produce flowers. I keep picking them off. The good side is that if you're growing rocket in open ground they will seed themselves and come up again the following year. I just keep planting a succession of seeds in pots. My coriander seedlings aren't producing as much leaf as I'd like but I keep picking them when I walk past them! I've tried cutting the rocket down hoping it will sprout more leaves. Definitely pick the flower buds off but if you've got room sow some more.0

Yes as far as I know, you need to pick off the flowers and stems, I dod the same with my cut and come again lettuce.
I think the plant will think its done its job when it flowers and not produce any more leaves.0 -
Not sure about rocket, but for coriander you need to pick the leaves regularly and this helps them to keep growing and should last you longer.
hope that helps.0 -
keep them well watered to prevent them going to seed, sorry not much of an answer to your question0

Well in short, yes. All flowering plants produce seed, so if you see flowers, you will get seed all other things being equal.
Every flowering plant will try and produce seed at the optimal time (which depends on the plant), normally when it has produced a decent root and leaf system and the climatic conditions are right (normally determined by a combination of daylight and temperature). Plants will also go to seed when they are stressed, because they desperately try to reproduce before they die - lack of water or nutrients are common reasons for stressing plants.
So you can do several things:
Firstly, keep taking the flowering stems out as low down as possible. This will encourage further leafy growth. As will constantly cropping the leaves quite heavily.
Secondly, keep them watered reasonably well.
Thirdly, feed them occasionally with a nigh nitrogen feed - this also encourages leafy growth rather than flower/fruit production.
Finally, sow a few more seeds now, so that if the first lot does go over totally, you won't have long to wait for some more.0 -
Plant them out and in a few years you will have as much rocket and coriander as the rabbits or you can eat
