Hi
I have a recipe for onion/chickpea bhajis and it needs bombay mixed spice - I don't have any and there's none in Tescos - what else could I use to get the same sort of effect?
I have quite a few indian spices but am not sure which ones would be best
Thanks!

I've made some falafel today which smell just like onion bhaji's. They had garlic, ground cumin, ground chilli & ground corriander in so I'd be tempted to give those a go if you've got them

In no particular order... Turmeric, Coriander, Cumin, Ginger and Chilli seem to be ones that are commonly used... You can add garlic, cinnamon, pepper etc too. Yummy... I think I'm going to do these for tea now!Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

Cumin is the main one that creates the bhajee taste. If you have a bit of curry paste you could use that as well.GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000

Another vote for garam masala. It is a good general purpose Indian spice mix. It is mainly coriander seed (about 70%) and cumin (about 10%), with ginger, cinnamon and clove.
It means "warm spices" in Hindi, BTW.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

Yep, I'd definitely use garam masala and maybe zizz it up with a bit of extra cumin & coriander.2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.

Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!0
