Application fees wrongfully taken from us

Hopefully I am posting this in the right section,

I was promised a Mortgage with Abbey National, after giving all information over that was required, which took 4 weeks, I was informed on Monday the 9th November, that they needed bank statements to prove my wages going in, I am paid cash each week, so my Mortgage Advisor told me that we could not continue on with this Mortgage and that she would cancel it and look elsewhere, in the meantime I went to my own bank to try for the Mortgage and had informed my broker not to continue on with any more searches.
My Broker phoned me on the Wednesday 11th Nov to inform me that she had a Mortgage with Halifax for me (after I had told her to stop doing the searches), she told me everything had been submitted and that Halifax where happy to give me the Mortgage, all they needed was the surveyor report, again I told her to hold off with this as I was waiting on word back from my own bank, she then informed me that she had been unable to get through to Abbey by phone to cancel the Mortgage and that she had faxed them to cancel.
On Friday 13th Nov, I was phoned by my Broker who informed me that Abbey had not received notification that the mortgage was cancelled and had taken £995 out of my bank account and that I had to continue on with the Mortgage from this Society, the only way I would get my money back is if they decline me, I also found out that Halifax had taken £ 779 out aswell, I never at any time said I would go with the Halifax, I know that arrangement fees are non refundable but this is clearly not my fault and I was hoping for advice on what to do next, as loosing £1,774 is quite a lot of money.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
