Legal Aid

Options
Hi

Firstly, thanks in advance for reading this.

I require (fairly urgently) the assistance of a solicitor to review an employment case filed by myself with the Employment Tribuneral.
I would need the solicitor to also speak on my behalf during the hearing.

The case includes a claim for damages and compensation.

Can anyone guide me in the right direction - I have a low income and am wondering about Legal Aid and how this works?

How long does it take to get the ball rolling and a solicitor involved?

What are the first steps?

Are all the assigned solicitors good (I'm afraid of ending up with a hopeless one).

Any assistance is with great thanks.

  • when i rang various solicitors about a problem with employment, I was told that they do not do legal aid for employment law. I would contact CAB and see if they can help. Sorry i cant be more helpful but thought i would pass on what i was told.

Most will give you a first interview for £50 ish and discuss the case. I would go to the ET office and have a chat with them they will give you lots of advice.
  • do you have legal assistance on your home insurance? if you do they will be able to deal with your employment dispute on your behalf (provided it was a permanent employment and not contracted or temporary). they also help with Personal injury, contract disputes (except employment), Boundary disputes and home disputes and Employment.

Alot of solicitors will give you their first initial assessment for free, it's just a case of finding them and booking an appointment,
  • There is a kind of legal aid called 'Legal Help'. Solicitors only get paid a fixed fee of about £200 for advising and representing in ET procedings so it is hard to come by. It really isn't cost effective for them. This is unlike county court proceedings where they get paid by the hour under full legal aid.

Try googling for community legal advice who may be able to help you or point you in the direction of a solicitor / CAB who do deal.

Some solicitors will take on a case on a no win, no fee basis but they would take a share of any damages you get. Try ringing around to see.
