Keeping the Car Clean and Shiny

2 years ago we were in the fortunate (and unusual for us!) position of being able to buy a brand new car.

Being a metallic finish it looked lovely and shiny so OH wanted to keep it that way.

There seem to be dozens of products on the market that promise to keep the shiny finish but OH has managed to do it by waiting until it rains and simply using a microfibre mitt to rub the car down.

I can't believe how clean and shiny it has stayed with just rain and a rub.

I'm sure the neighbours wonder what OH is doing when there is a downpour!

I'm sure there will come a time when the car will need more than this so what OS ideas are there for car cleaning? (not for me personally of course - I'm just a spectator :D)

OH does use a bit of WU liquid and a soft brush for the wheel trims but that's all.

    I found this

    http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/66316/car_polish_megatest.html

I use auto glym for three reasons

    1. it does the job
    2. its easy to rub off
    3. It smells nice
  • There are so many similar products on the market for varying prices that I'm sure many people have their favourites.

I was asking really if anyone has OS ideas for car cleaning.......or is this a realm where OS has ceased? (except for my OH's rainwater and microfibre mitt).

Is OS really incompatible with cleaning the outside of a car?

OH has managed to do it by waiting until it rains and simply using a microfibre mitt to rub the car down.

Not sure how good an idea this is, the rain will have a small amount of grit in it, and the car will have a layer of road grime on the surface. Add the rainwater and you are actually giving the car a very fine sanding every time you rub it down with the microfibre mitt.

With time the clear top coat will be rubbed off and it will start looking faded.

If you want a cheap wash, would be better to use buckets of water with a little shampoo in it, if you don't mind spending a small amount buy a bottle of cheap wash and wax.

  • I'd agree with the above post, and also about using auto glym - barely need any of the stuff so it lasts forever. it's an area where I think that buying cheap is a false economy
