i went to poundland yesterday in brighton and was very surprised to find 50g balls of chenille wool for £1. bought a few different colours, 5 of the black and just realised i dont have a knitting pattern for any chenille wool. does anyone have any or can give me advice as to what size needles would be best to use and what alternative wool does it knit up like chunky? any advice would be great

Chenille comes in different weights, like other wools. Most that I have used knit up like double knitting - in other words, use 10s and 8s needles (3.25 and 4 mm) for the rib and the stocking stitch respectively.
The only real way to tell is by knitting it - can you bear to do a swatch on 4mm needles and see how the tension compares to the tension of a double knitting pattern?0 -
i may have to do that to try it out, not really a summery wool so think it may sit in bottom of wardrobe for a while. not sure husband could bare another pair of socks lol0

Knitting seems to be having a revival at the moment and I saw some monthly knitting magazines in Tesco the other week ... no reason why you couldn't have a free flick through :whistle:
Alternatively, check out your local library and have a gander in their knitting/craft books?
You can also sign up for free knitting patterns at Lion Brand Yarn
Registration for free patterns gives you unrestricted access to over 1,000 free patterns. Rest assured we will never share your information with anyone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Skint1s Wife here. Try this site:
http://knitting.about.com/library/weekly/aa060197.htm
It's a pretty huge site with links to lots of helpful sources. The patterns I've found here are usually very clear and easy to follow. They have just about everything you can imagine somewhere. It's the sort of site you can happily lose yourself in for an hour or so.
If you have some scraps of chenille left and a small child who likes cuddling things, it's great for little teddies etc, too.
:cool:
I've had good results making really cuddly scarves with 5 and 6mm needles. Bigger needles give a looser fabric which I find softer--chenille can get stiff if you make the fabric too taut.You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.0 -
... the other thing is to check the band on the ball of wool. Does it have knitting needle sizes and/or tension written on it? Some do, in which case, it's a piece of cake to compare it to your pattern - and no swatch (necessarily) needed...0
