This week I though, "I know, instead of shopping in Tesco I'll try Lidle" I thought this would save me a packet as I'd tried it before and thought it was cheaper but I was shocked at how expensive it is now!
Last week I managed to do my weeks shopping at Tesco for £7, leaving £3 of my budget to get extras during the week. This week my shopping cost £16 in Lidle and I'm going to have to go to town to get lots of bits that I couldn't get. I accept the £5 was spent on supplying my baking cuoboard as I intend to start making pies and muffins this weekend but still all I bought othere than that was potatoes, crisps, cerial, wafer thin ham, milk, one bag of frozen veg, and a bar of chocolate! Conssidering I could have done my shopping for free on my Tesco vouchers I came out of the shop feeling very miffed indeed!
Just wondered if anyone else has had the same experience with this supposedly cheap store and where everyone else finds cheapest to shop.
Always found it much cheaper meself - I'm shocked!
Errm, do you have the Lidl receipt there, maybe copy out the items and prices line by line to see what's gone on? Good way to compare against Tesco or whatever......0 -
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I've saved a lot shopping at Lidl but I think that is because I am not as tempted to overspend as I am in Tesco. Somehow when I go to Tesco the bill is always £50 or more but in Lidl I can get away with half that.
In Lidl I buy ingredients for meals whereas in Tesco I am tempted by ready meals or preprepared food.0 -

All supermarkets try to tempt us, even the bottom end ones!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

I can't shop to a list in Lidl (or Aldi)-they don't have the range, and some of their stuff is very expensive. I buy the bargains and leave. I was so frustrated last night because DS announced in the supermarket that he needed ingredients for school-and did Lidl have them? We had to make a special trip to Sainsbury's, and, like fools, we stopped at Aldi on the way (they had the ingredients but they were expensive and not very nice looking). Three supermarkets for one cookery lesson. Gah!import this0

I generally pop into Lidl's for the fruit and veg bargains mainly, though if it's something I need or use a lot (baked beans for instance when they were 4 for £1) then I will buy that item too. I often buy deli meats there and sugar, one is good quality and the other cheap!
Perhaps it'd be worth doing a price comparison between your receipt from Lidl and the Tesco price on mysupermarket.com, it may just be one item that has skewed things, or different sizes?
Prices can also vary wildly week by week in the same shop, and quite often recently I've noticed that the regular product has been cheaper than the value item.
I shop around for my food, but then I'm quite happy to make the time to do so - and I actually quite enjoy food shopping! So my bills tend to be kept down that way. I also shop for 6 usually, so I guess my cost savings by shopping around are magnified somewhat.
I go to Lidl and Aldi for fruit and veg offers, Tesco for main shop as I get a discount (though sometimes Asda is still cheaper!),Sainsburys/Morries/Asda/Somerfield when passing to pick up any offers (you do need to be strong willed to not end up with other stuff though!) Recently a Waitrose has opened and I've been trying some of their basic range, they are excellent value and superb quality, plus the staff are great and I can park easily!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
I tend to buy my veg at Lidl/Aldi and my favourite brand of beer which varies between £1.48 and £1 a bottle depending on the week! I did a price comparison between Lidl and Tesco a fortnight ago and Tesco were £7 more expensive for similar items. I think the answer is to look carefully before you go. A 2 minute visit to the supermarket's website before you set out can pay dividends.0
