Applying for internal DWP job while on probation

I recently joined the DWP on an 18 month contract as an EO with Jobcentre Plus but I wanted to apply for permanent job.
I was wondering if anyone knew if you can apply for internal jobs with Dwp whilst you are still in your probation?
I have rang the HR department and they said you can't but then other colleagues say you can. I was wondering if anyone knew a bit more about this?
Thanks.

Find this very strange. Effectively the HR department is saying that you are at a disadvantage to staff from outside of the organisation?
Perhaps you could write querying your understanding of applying for jobs. If they come back stating you cannot, write again asking why given that you now have knowledge and experience that would only benefit the DWP in a permanent role.0 -
In what was my bit of the Civil Service (MoD) if you're on a short term contract you cannot apply for INTERNAL vacancies at all, there's no restriction on external jobs. Whilst on probation you can't apply for internal vacancies either. DWP may have similiar rules
The difinitive answer will be in DWPs staff handbook which will be easily avaliable, probably on the DWP intranet (assuming they have such a thing)0 -
Yes you can apply for level transfer or promotion internal or external permanent positions while still in your probationary period0

Excuse my ignorance, but what is level transfer. Do you mean changing job role within the same grade or changing location or even both.0 -
Hi
I was looking at some (internal only) jobs on RM the other day and it clearly stated that there were no restrictions on Fixed Term Appointees (like us), as long as your line manager would endorse your application. However, I guess the rules might not be the same for each job.0 -

I answered your post on the other DWP thread, you can apply for Permanent posts but because you've only been in post a short time you can only apply for Promotion e.g. if you are an EO you can apply for HEO posts. This does apply to all staff and is not specifically because you are on probation. You have to stay in a post for two years unless you specifically have the permission of you overall Manager (not LM) to move which seems very unlikely."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0
