I'd dispute the claim that tax is higher in Aus than the UK. Perhaps a few years ago before the Liberals lowered tax rates. And aren't they talking about a 50% tax rate in the UK?

On a quick calc at £1 = $2 which is generous to the Brits these days I realise, I still pay more Tax + NI in the UK than I would in Aus. At $2.5 per £ they're close but Aus still less tax. At $1.8 per £ (current rates) Aus wins easily.

Try it for yourself there are lots of online calculators for the both UK and Aus. That's assuming you can get a similar salary in Aus though, which may not be the case.

    In the UK:
Rent is higher, I have to pay Council Tax (BTLer pays it in Aus), and heating and public transport are a lot more. But I live in London so you have to expect some of that. Petrol is more expensive, as are the costs of running a car. Generali has already mentioned that VAT > GST.

Some things are more expensive in Aus due to scale and distances they need to be transported, but my grocery bill here is more.

Australian property is a disaster waiting to happen IMO.

    I agree there.

I know only Sydney so sorry for the local bias but I'd say that it's reasonable for East prices to be about where they are: they're toppy but not crazy. The problem is with Parramatta and Penrith prices, the 'mortgage belt'.

The climate is horrible out West as is the commute and the prices are rising, basically because it's the only bit of Sydney where prices are such that FTBs get an exemption from stamp duty.

I wouldn't want to live in Penrith. The blue mountains areas are nice but still way too long a commute and no beaches. Another downside is you'd be labelled a westy by your mates forever! :)

Personally I'd prefer Wollongong or the Central Coast which are a similar commute, but prices there aren't cheap either.

I also think rents will not be able to rise too much in the near future and rental yields are not particularly good.

It'll be fine, I was just a bit grumpy. Thanks for the kiss!

Sorry again to Harry Powell, I was out of order. No two ways about it.

Oh and well done to the idiot that felt compelled to go to the bother of setting up a new account just to send me an abusive PM yesterday. It seems a strange way to spend 15 minutes of the only life you're ever going to live but there you go.

Those communities up in the mountains are lovely (with the possible exception of Katoomba - too many street drunks there). Penrith is horrible though and I don't look good in a flannelette shirt, mullet and stubbie holder:

    We finally plumped for Gladesville.

Agreed. But the commute would kill you.

Nobody does. But don't tell the locals...

Good choice, it's a nice area, well located and good for the price. Did I recommend that one a while ago? :)
