Cookie Dough

I made so cookie dough at Halloween which had a very high butter content. When I put them in the oven and pretty halloween shapes they kind of melted and became one amorphous blob with no definition of the cookie cutter! I put the other half of the dough in the freezer and was wondering if there was anything I could do to make them more stable so I can make xmas cookies? Do you think adding more flour would make it better?
